Benefits of dates
Have you also noticed that during the Christmas season, dried dates are all around us and then quietly retreat from the main shelves to the dark aisles of healthy food? It is just a huge shame because they deserve our attention all year round.
Dates are thought to be one of the oldest fruits on Earth. Some sources state that surviving evidence of the deliberate cultivation of these fruits dates back a whopping 7,000 years before BC. But fossil traces of the date palm go back much further in history.
The first date palms found the light of day somewhere in what is now Pakistan and Iraq, and slowly spread to other tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Today, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and Egypt are the biggest producers.
Dates are the fruit of the date tree, which has long-petioled leaves. They grow in abundant clusters and grow up to seven centimetres long. Ripe dates are usually red or dark brown and are harvested from August to December, depending on the variety.
If you are on holiday somewhere and taste a fresh date, you will find that it has a very sweet, sometimes even caramel-like taste. In our area, you are more likely to find the dried variety, but fortunately, it does not lose any of its flavour, aroma or benefits. The texture of the dried fruit is only slightly rubbery, but the distinct sweetness remains.
Dates can be eaten on their own, but are often used as a flavouring in everything from milkshakes, porridge and desserts to tea blends, etc. There is no limit to the dosage.
