Benefits of Black elderberry - flower
Do you want to play the flute, dye your hair or get rid of all sorts of worries? Then, you need to find a black elderberry that allows you to do all this. Especially for the last one.
The elderberry (Sambucus nigra in Latin) is a shrub or tree that can reach a height of around seven metres. The typical features are the tiny white flowers and blackberries growing in dense clusters.
You can find it virtually all over the Northern Hemisphere. It prefers soil with plenty of nutrients and moisture.
Its health benefits have been described by Hippocrates himself, but extant evidence suggests they go back even further. However, it is crucial to heat-treat the plant beforehand, either by cooking or drying. Otherwise, there is a risk of undesirable health problems. Elderberries make excellent marmalades, wines and liqueurs. Especially in the Nordic countries, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks made from these berries are popular. Whole rosettes of flowers can be fried in the manner of cauliflower. This recipe is called ''kosmatice'' in Czech.
However, the dried flowers are mainly used for making brine. To increase the health benefits, flowers that have not yet fully developed are dried. The whole process takes place out of direct sunlight to preserve their alabaster colour. The decoction can be indulged in by all in normal quantities for up to eight weeks. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to discuss consumption with their doctor to be on the safe side.
