Benefits of Acorus
Who would have expected that an ordinary-looking grass growing somewhere by a pond would be such a helper for health problems? And it was not just our grandmothers who thought so. In this, they agreed with the masters of Ayurvedic medicine.
The bright green plant with the Latin name Acorus calamus, which can be found all over Europe and North America, originated in Asia, probably in China. Its natural habitat is, for example, wetlands, swamps or pond edges. In short, anywhere near water. It grows up to 150 centimetres tall, with leaves reaching almost the same height. The miniature flowers form a cone of yellowish colour. The leaves are typical for their captivating, sweet scent. All you have to do is pluck it. Although it may not seem like it, Acorus has been used as a spice for centuries. Its dried root has replaced the rarer cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. The essential oil from the root was added to flavour tobacco and alcoholic beverages. It is still used in the cosmetics industry for its effects and fragrance.
However, it has a strong position mainly in natural medicine. Folk healers have always prepared an infusion full of benefits for our health from the chopped dried root. It was used alone or added to mixtures of other beneficial herbs.
You can indulge in Acorus decoction for up to eight weeks, after which we advise a short break. It is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. People with blood pressure and heart problems should consult their doctor first.
