Benefits of achiote
Have you ever tasted a piece of the "lipstick tree"? Have you not? Then you should quickly fix that and try achiote, whose seeds please the eye thanks to their colouring abilities, while the leaves delight the whole organism.
The exotic name suggests that achiote's home is the mysterious and still unexplored forests of Central and South America. It is a large shrub that loves tropical and subtropical climates. Today, you can find it in Asia and Africa.
At first sight, it impresses with its distinctive, inedible fruits, which contain a large number of fleshy seeds. These have been used for thousands of years for their colouring properties in food, body decoration and ritual purposes. Their intense colour gives the tree its ''lipstick'' nickname.
The seeds are also used medicinally but are surpassed in their effects by achiote leaves.
They are made into a simple tea-like infusion or infused in highly concentrated alcohol to make a tonic.
While the seeds have a strong flavour and are used as a colouring agent and spice in gastronomy, the leaves have purely herbal notes. The infusion is golden, pleasant and very drinkable. Although it has many health benefits, bear in mind that it is essentially an herb, so two or three cups a day are sufficient.
