The color of heather tea is slightly pink to golden, just like the reflection of an evening sky. The taste is surprisingly mild and floral with a subtle trace of honey and a pinch of refreshing acidity. Its aroma is reminiscent of summer meadow with some pine needles sprinkled in.
Origins
Heather grows almost everywhere, from Europe to Western Asia and North Africa. It even made it to North America, where the conditions were so favorable it spread on its own. It’s simply a plant that can withstand anything. It grows on sandy soil or peat bogs and can handle both sun and partial shade. It often forms beautiful pink ‘carpets’ that tourists love to take photos of. It blooms from July to September, and it’s best to pick it just as it starts to flower.
Heather supports normal urinary tract and kidney function. Mental wellbeing, focus, relaxation, and a positive mood are exactly what we need in today's hectic times, and heather can provide us with all of that. It also promotes sleep and strengthens immunity. Simply put, a cup of heather will take care of your overall wellbeing.
Heather has a rich history. In some Slavic nations, the name of the eighth month of the year is actually based on this plant. In the Middle Ages, it was used to brew beer long before hops became a thing. Some sources claim that beer was made from it as early as 2000 years ago, and it was particularly popular in the British Isles. The Scots and Irish considered heather sacred. White heather is said to bring good luck, which is why people wore it as a talisman. Beekeepers also love it, since heather honey is thick, dark, and full of minerals.
Interestingly, brooms were made from heather. Its Latin name, calluna, literally means “for sweeping”. Its seeds can germinate even after years of dormancy, which is a great strategy for surviving fires. We won't be using the plant for cleaning the house, but it's excellent as a tea for boosting your mood.
However, be careful if you have a severe kidney disease, as you should consult your doctor first. Sensitive individuals may experience stomach problems due to tannins when taking higher doses. In any case, it’s recommended to take regular breaks during long-term use.
