Guanxi Green Snail Tea produces a light yellow infusion. It smells delicate and fresh, and the flavor is full, fruity and sweet, with just a slight astringency.
Origins
In the mountainous terrain of southern China, a prefecture was established around 200BC, which from the very beginning was accompanied by various power struggles and battles. Its original inhabitants are referred to in literature as the Pai-yue. It was annexed to China during the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huang-ti and given the name Guangxi, meaning "Western Expansion". It became a province during the Yuan Dynasty and was granted autonomous region status in 1958. Much of the territory is covered by forests, and the climate is characterized by warm days with high humidity, often influenced by monsoons. The average annual temperature is reported to range from 17-23⁰C. The highest peak in Guangxi is Kitten Mountain at altitude of 2,141m.
It should be mentioned that Guangxi is not as well known in the tea world as, say, Yunnan or Hunan. But that doesn't mean that we can't find teas of superior quality and unique taste in its production. The Green Snail, a green tea grown in high-altitude gardens, is a case in point.
The tea, which looks like green snail shells, is made from delicate leaves harvested by hand. Women and girls head out to the Chinese tea plantations (Camellia sinensis) early in the morning to avoid dewfall. The growers leave the leaves to wilt and, to prevent the natural oxidation of the enzymes, expose them to a short period of high temperature. The next step is rolling into snail shell shapes, drying, sorting and packing.
Chinese green teas are distinguished by their meticulous processing. The procedures and recipes have been passed down through families for hundreds of years as well as the rituals of their preparation and drinking. Guangxi Green Snail tea is perfect for the Gong Fu Cha ceremony. It can be used to make up to 3 infusions, which always differ in aroma and taste.
