Origins
Graviola, also known as Annona muricata or soursop, is a distinctive evergreen tree. It grows to a height of 3-8 m and has smooth, glossy, dark green, egg-shaped leaves. It produces yellow-green flowers that appear directly on the branches and trunk.
The most distinctive feature of the tree is its fruit – large, heart-shaped, or oval ‘spheres’ covered with soft spikes. Their green skin hides a white, fibrous flesh with shiny black seeds. In their natural habitat, they serve as an important food source not only for humans but also for birds and other animals. The flesh has a slightly sweet and sour taste.
The graviola's natural habitat is the tropical regions of Central and South America, where it grows most often in the lowlands up to an altitude of 1,150 m. It’s commonly found in rainforests, but farmers also cultivate it commercially on plantations in Peru, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Cuba.
What’s guanábana food for? The indigenous people of the Amazon used all parts of the plant. The leaves and bark were used to make decoctions and the fruit was used as a nutritious addition to the diet. What’s more, this exotic plant was part of cleansing and strengthening rituals.
Guanábana leaves contain:
- Acetogenins (unique biologically active compounds – they’re currently being studied for their potential in cellular protection),
- flavonoids (antioxidants that contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress),
- alkaloids,
- vitamin C,
- potassium, and magnesium.
