Origins
Golden Monkey, also known as Panyong Wang or Jin Hou, is a unique tea of the highest quality. The petals, rich with young, golden fuzzy tips, are uniformly rolled. They look like the paws of a monkey, a legendary and much-loved Chinese animal. Golden Monkey is produced in a province on the southeast coast of China renowned for its tea gardens. Fujian has a subtropical climate with mild winters. Temperatures vary according to altitude, and the area is known for high rainfall and summer typhoons from the Pacific.
Tea gardens in the mountains of Fujian province are famous for their exceptionally high-quality green teas, with black teas being added to their production in recent years. Their fame is growing, not only because of the excellent qualities of the local tea plants but especially for the precise methods of growing, harvesting and processing. The leaves are hand-harvested in spring and transported quickly to the farms. Only the bud and the first leaf are harvested. The fermentation is strong, a well-stored tea retains its flavor and aroma for months.
This tea has won World Tea Championship in 2009. It is typical for its high content of young, golden fluffy tips.
