Origins
Even the beautiful Helena of Troy could not resist the charm of this root. Its flowers are said to have been taken with her when she was taken by the valiant Paris. She is also the one who gave Elecampane its Latin name: Inula helenium.
It is a perennial, richly branched herb with large leaves and bright yellow flowers. It commonly grows to a height of 1.5m, but can some specimanes can reach up to 3m. It can be found in meadows and roadsides from Spain to western China. It prefers shady places with nutrient-rich soil.
The power of Elecampane root was described by Ayurveda as well as the ancient Greeks and Romans. They laid the foundation for its use, so it's still popular today to prepare drops, tinctures and syrups.
The easiest way to get the best out of Elecampane is, of course, to make a tea of the dried root. This can also suitable for pregnant and nursing women. However, we advise to consume it responsibly and for a maximum of 8 weeks at a time.
