Eggnog Black Tea is a combination of high-quality tea from Sri Lanka, candied and freeze-dried fruits and sugar stars. Thanks to the balance of all the ingredients, this blend, when covered with hot water, makes a drink reminiscent of a delicious eggnog with a splash of fruit juice and a nice tartness at the end. The tea has a dark amber to brown color.
Origins
The name Ceylon is linked with tea, but the island nation in Southeast Asia is known as Sri Lanka since 1972. What has been true for almost 200 years is that the country, with a capital city with the long name of Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte, produces tea of excellent quality and pays considerable attention to it. It is not so often that growers can turn to the Tea Research Institute. Or that tea exporters can associate themselves with a specialized chamber of commerce. Also unique is the protection of the local tea brand, as Ceylon tea has become the focus of all sorts of counterfeiters. The real producers pack it in bags with the Lion Logo, an image of a lion holding a sword. It guarantees the authenticity of the tea and the highest quality, which is set by strict standards. The use of the logo is controlled by the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the governing body of the tea industry in Sri Lanka.
The first tea trees were brought to Ceylon by James Taylor in 1867. Through trial and error, he not only managed to convince local farmers of the benefits of growing tea bushes but also discovered the best way to process the tea leaves. This enterprising Scotsman devoted his life to tea growing, and it was he who was responsible for its spread on the island. Today, the plantations cover about 4% of the land and produce over 300,000 tonnes of tea annually. This makes the country the 4th largest exporter of tea in the world. In 2013, tea contributed $1.5 billion to Sri Lanka's economy.
But let's not forget the other ingredients added to the Eggnog tea blend, such as freeze-dried mango chunks and candied pineapple. The former is all-natural. Thanks to the freeze-drying process, the fruit has been dried very gently and therefore retains its freshness. Candying is another way of preserving the fruit for a longer time. This is a very old process, which dehydrates the fruit and preserves it with sugar syrup. We have combined all the tea ingredients in the right proportions to bring out the natural taste and aroma of Ceylon tea and only subtly accentuate the other components. That is the magic of Eggnog tea.
