Origins
Yes, Hubei may not be as famous as provinces like Yunnan or Fujian. But that does not affect the quality of the tea there. Because it is top-notch. But first, we will describe this area where China Milk Black Gunpowder was born. It is the natural conditions and the great care of the tea trees that majorly influence the quality of the final product.
Hubei is located in central China, north of the famous Dongting Lake. It borders with other tea regions such as Anhui or Jiangxi. The province is richly supplied with water from the Yangtze River and its headwaters, and tea plantations are located on the hillsides. The climate in Hubei is subtropical, with distinct seasons. In winter temperatures range between 1-6˚C, and in summer between 24-30˚C. If you visit Hubei or look at other travellers' photos, you will usually see tea plantations covered in mist. Frequent rainfall, along with soil conditions and temperature throughout the year, affect the taste and aroma of the tea leaves. Many of the local tea gardens are located far from crowded cities and industrial areas. Hubei tea is therefore exceptionally sweet and fresh.
In China, only cooperatives are usually allowed to own agricultural land. Small farmers organize themselves to harvest, process and sell the tea together. This is no different in Hubei. The farmers look after the tea trees (Camellia sinensis) all year round under the supervision of the cooperatives, which provide them with the necessary services. In some areas, the bushes are still plucked by hand. Once the leaves have wilted, they must be pressed into tiny beads and left to ferment for an appropriate time. Of course, the temperature and length of the process are strictly monitored. This is what determines how tasty and high-quality the resulting tea will be. After the fermentation is finished, the gunpowder goes to the drying rooms. For the final taste, natural milk essential oil was used in the production of this gunpowder. People who are lactose intolerant should be cautious when consuming this tea.
