Papaya Leaves – Herb
You know it from the shelves with exotic produce. Someone may have picked the sweet fruit while wandering around Central America. But the leaves? Papaya leaves are relatively new to herbalists, yet the natives use them for toothaches and nerve pain. They taste sweet and mild with a slightly bitter aftertaste.
Ingredients
100 % Papaya leafBrew & Taste
The infusion of papaya leaves is dark yellow in color. The aroma is very faint, a little like freshly dried hay. The taste can be described as mild, sweetish, slightly bitter towards the end.
Origins
The papaya fruit was nicknamed the fruit of the angels in the days of Christopher Columbus. However, it is true that before the Spanish and Portuguese seafarers, the sweet pear-like fruit was known to the indigenous Central American tribes. In this case, however, it is not a papaya with yellow flesh and a thousand pits. The leaves are equally interesting in terms of their health benefits.
The huge herbs resembling trees can grow up to 10m tall. They are native to Central America, but are cultivated almost everywhere in the tropics. Papaya (Carica papaya) has a hollow stem that looks like a tree trunk and produces sweet-smelling flowers in the leaf axils. The fruit of the papaya is a berry weighing between 0,5-10kg.
Up to 75cm long deciduous leaves resemble the shape of a human hand. Selected cuisines around the world use the young leaves in a similar way to vegetables – by incorporating them into a variety of dishes. Like the unripe fruit, young papaya leaves contain extremely healthy substances.
