Benefits of lime

If bartenders have a regular nightmare, it is that they are out of lime. Because in this business, the lemon's little sister is indispensable. And believe me, it does more than just put a funny grin on your face when you taste it.

Lime is a source of vitamins and other beneficial substances. This property was especially appreciated by sailors in ancient times, many of whom were saved from the dreaded scurvy. In the second half of the 19th century, a decree was even issued in the naval power Great Britain, which made it compulsory to carry a sufficient supply of limes or lemons on board ships at all times. This provision is still in force today.

The fruit grows on small trees and is deliberately harvested unripe. The origin of the fruit can be traced back to northeast Asia, from which the trees spread to southern Europe and the American continent. Because cultivation requires plenty of sun and higher daytime temperatures, the fruit thrives mainly in the subtropics. Today, the USA (mainly California and Florida) and Mexico are among the largest producers. Here, probably the most famous variety of lime is grown - the key lime. The fruit has a specific astringent taste, although there is also a sweet variant. It is a useful tool in gastronomy, where it can bring out the flavour of food in a savoury way. But it can also work wonders in drinks, whether it is just water with lime juice or the aforementioned mixed drinks.
