Benefits of devil's claw
When you come across it in full bloom, you wonder how it earned its not-so-flattering name. But one look at the dry root and all becomes clear. The devil's claw, or wooden spider, will make up for its loss of beauty.
If you want to see the devil's claw bloom, you have to go into the desert to find it. And straight to the Kalahari. There, on the edges of the more fertile areas, you will find this creeping plant of rather smaller height. It produces a woody fruit with hooks and lots of seeds. The tubular flowers are beautifully coloured mostly deep pink.
Its powerful benefits have been repeatedly demonstrated over many millennia by generations of Bushmen and other indigenous peoples of the African continent. However, its fame did not reach Europe until the early twentieth century. The root and tuber are most often ground into a fine, light powder. Its taste is rather bitter, so it is better, for example, to mix it in water or add it to food.
The recommended daily amount is about 3g per day for about three months. However, it is not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women and when combining it with medication, it is best to consult your doctor.
