Origins
Blooming or flowering teas are an extremely interesting tea category. Although they originate from China, which has been famous for its tea production for several hundred years, they have only recently come to the forefront of tea lovers' attention.
There are two widely conflicting versions of why this is so. One claims that flowering tea dates back to the 10th century, when the art of tea-binding was cultivated in imperial courts for visual pleasure rather than for the sake of drinking it. And now comes its renaissance. The second refers back to a lady in the 1990s, Yun Xue Tong, who longed to create a product combining tea and flowers. One that would make it unique, interesting and competitive among classic teas. It was said to be her strong vision that led to the creation of a new type of tea.
The name blooming tea can be a little confusing – the bloom is not from the tea plant. The hand-tied leaves of green or white tea surround a decorative flower, very often jasmine, hibiscus or a chrysanthemum. All the ingredients need to be both well chosen and carefully stored and tightly tied or stitched into a cohesive sphere. Otherwise, they may not fall to the bottom when covered with hot water, but float. This would completely ruin the blooming effect. The resulting bundle (sometimes the flowering tea is in the shape of a heart or a cylinder) also needs to be dried well.
Flowering tea makers are now making very good profits and employing many skilled "tea artisans" throughout China. Flowering teas can be a symbol of love, happiness, prosperity... The artists who produce them are therefore very careful about the quality and visual purity of the ingredients.
